Under the Presidency of Côte d’Ivoire, COP15 Desertification adopted three (03) Declarations and approved a series of decisions to strengthen and intensify field actions in order to accelerate the achievement of the objectives of the Convention. With a view to ensuring effective and efficient monitoring of the implementation of these decisions, a COP15 Desertification President’s Roadmap has been developed, in accordance with the expectations of the Parties to the UNCCD. Thus, the missions of the President of COP15 Desertification are based on four (04) major pillars which are:
- I. The thirty-six (36) Resolutions or Decisions of COP15 Desertification;
- II. The Abidjan Appeal launched by the Heads of State and Government;
- III. The “Land, Life and Heritage” Declaration including the Abidjan Legacy Program, a global and innovative approach of $1.5 billion over five (05) years to combat deforestation through forest restoration and aims to restore 20% of Ivorian forest cover by the end of the decade;
- IV. The “Abidjan Declaration on Achieving Gender Equality for Successful Land Restoration” which emerged from the Gender Caucus.
The following missions are among the essential missions contained in the Roadmap:
- Ensure supervision of the implementation of COP15 Desertification resolutions;
- Ensure the establishment of the Abidjan Legacy Program governance framework and its operationalization;
- Establish a mechanism for monitoring the execution of the Abidjan Heritage Program;
- Ensure that gender is effectively taken into account in national policies to combat desertification;
